Basic Idea about Memory Cards
A memory
card is basically a chip card with memory and controlled only by fixed logic.
It does not have a microprocessor to run the system. The memory card is a natural
progress from the Compact Disk. With exponential development in technology,
demands for more storage space with multi-facilities and multiple interfaces
have also grown. People wanted powerful and ubiquitous portable devices and
compacts disks were found wanting in their utilities because CDs could not have
data stored on them after the initial stamp.
The memory card is
very tiny in size and is easy-to-use but offers a host of powerful advantages.
Memory card can smoothly link to several kinds of digital equipments via its
easy connectivity features and transfers data at a really high speed. It can
also support lots of different applications and platform from a mobile handset
to a digital camera, gamming console, playstations and digital music gadgets
like the iPod. Initially memory cards were available in one format only which
is known as CompactFlash. But soon new formats like MemoryStick, MultiMediaCard
(MMC), SecureDigitalCard (SD Card), SmartMedia and xD-Picture Card were
introduced in the market. CompactFlash is the de facto standard to flash memory
storage. It can be used in any digital device from a digital camera to a mobile
handset that has external memory feature. Multi Media Cards (MMC) are smaller
in size but has same features. SD cards have been made using the Multi Media
Card (MMC) format but they are physically thicker than MMC cards that gives
them some advantage over MMC cards. Almost all memory cards use write-protect
tab and devices into which they are plugged can sense the absence of the tab
from the front notch thus protecting the cards from writes. A memory cards
usually have huge memory storage capacity but there seems to be no limit. With
growing popularity among consumer to use digital gadgets, memory storage
capacity is always found less than the demand. So, newer models and versions
with more and more storage capacity are being introduced by companies to get an
edge over their competitors by rendering existing models useless. This leaves
the consumer with the option to purchase an additional memory card with a
greater capacity and higher read and write performance.
